Provisional Class Projects

On May 3, 2008 the Spring Provisional Class successfully completed their “Get Fit” project at Gates-Chili High School. There were multiple stations that incorporated all aspects of fitness. Some of the stations were: body stats, “move and groove” cardio, strength training, and stretching. The girls also got to take home a fabulous gift bag!

The Fall 2007 Provisional Class service project supported the Bethany House, which provides shelter to homeless women. They conducted a drive to supply the Bethany House with items for infants, and cooked dinner for the current residents and staff of the Bethany House.

The Fall 2005 Provisional Class organized the project “While I Was Your Age” Memory book project at Maplewood Estates. Each child was paired with a senior and a provisional class member. The seniors had 40 minutes to tell something about their life growing up. They told their favorite childhood treats, how they used to get to get to school, where they grew up, favorite toys etc. Each child was given a coloring pad and a box of crayons to draw with. The children drew pictures of the stories through their own eyes. After the one-on-one story time was over each child presented their pictures and the senior’s stories in their own words to all the participants. The children were all great presenters, retelling the stories very accurately. The seniors were delighted to hear their stories told by the children and were very impressed at the tiny details that the children picked up on. The amount of excitement and praise we received from all of the participants at the end of the day was astounding. Everyone, including the JLR Provisional Class members, left Maplewood that day with smiles from ear to ear. There is a lot to be gained by uniting two generations. It goes to show no matter the age we can all learn from one another.

The 2004 Fall Provisional Class introduced their new member project “Holiday Treasures: A Family Portrait”. The project gathered women in the YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County Residence and Young Parents Support Services Programs and their children to provide an opportunity to take their portraits. In many cases, this was the first opportunity for these families to have a portrait.  The Provisional Class arranged for each family member to take home a 5x7 family portrait to enjoy for years to come.  The event included fun interactive holiday crafts and activities, delicious refreshments and games for the children.  We are pleased and excited to provide this memorable service to the YWCA.  The Junior League and the YWCA-working together to “renew women and rebuild lives.”

“You can’t imagine how much something like this means to the women and families in our programs. We really appreciate the support that the Junior League has continually given to the YWCA.” – Ellen Disano,YWCA

The Fall 2003 Provisional Class invited area Girl Scouts, and a Boy Scout to put on a talent show at the Village of Park Ridge, an assisted living center for seniors. They provided refreshments, hors d'oevres, desserts and door prizes for the over 60 residents that attended the event.  The fall class enjoyed working with the residents, and providing these teen women and children an opportunity to participate in a community service project.

The Spring 2003 Provisional class wrapped up their snack food collection for the families at Ronald McDonald House. The class delivered more than 10 boxes of grab and go snacks! The Ronald McDonald House hosts families from all over the United States and abroad. Families are welcome to stay for as long as they need and have direct access to Strong Hospital. RMH successfully creates a homey environment for families to stay and receive support during their loved ones’ health crisis.  A big thank you to all of the members that made a donation to the food collection, to the several corporate offices that supported this project and to the Brighton High School Helping Hands group.
